Central Queensland University: A Study Guide For Nepali Students

Central Queensland University was originally established in 1967 at Rockhampton, Central Queensland. Hence, the name. However, the university has now expanded its institute beyond the Central Queensland region. So, it is now known as CQUniversity.

It is one of the seven universities affiliated under Regional Universities Network Australia.

CQUniversity provides courses in the field of Nursing, Engineering, Information Technology, Business, Accounting, and so on. Also, it is present in various locations like Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, etc. This makes it one of the top destinations for Nepali students.

Requirement Criteria to Enroll in CQUniversity

To apply for any course in the university, you must meet the requirements criteria of the university. The criterion ensures that you are eligible to take the course.

You have to fulfill 2 major requirements:

1. Academic Requirements

The minimum academic requirements will be different for different courses. Here is a generalized requirement in different courses for Nepali students.

Diploma Courses

  • Completion of Higher Secondary Education (12)
  • Minimum Second Division Grade

Undergraduate Courses (Bachelor)

  • Higher Secondary Education (12)
  • First Division Grade
  • Diploma Course (3 years)

Postgraduate Courses (Master)

  • Bachelor degree in the related field
  • Work Experience (Optional)
  • Postgraduate Research requires finding a research supervisor

2. English Language requirements

The overall course and assessments are based on the English language. Hence, students from Nepal must demonstrate English Language proficiency.

English proficiency is evaluated based on the score on various language tests. And, you must meet the minimum score requirement for your course.

The minimum test score is different for different courses. And, your test score is valid for 2 years.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • Diploma: 5.5, minimum 5 in each band
  • Undergraduate: 6.0, minimum 5.5 in each band
  • Postgraduate Course: 6.0, minimum 5.5 in each band
  • Postgraduate Research: 6.5, minimum 6 in each band

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Internet-Based

  • Diploma: 65, minimum 15 in each section
  • Undergraduate: 75, minimum 17 in each section (Exceptions apply)
  • Postgraduate Course: 75, minimum 17 in each section (Exceptions apply)
  • Postgraduate Research: 79, minimum 21 in each section

PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic)

  • Diploma: 46, minimum 42 in each module
  • Undergraduate: 54, minimum 46 in each module
  • Postgraduate Course: 54, minimum 46 in each module
  • Postgraduate Research: 62, minimum 54 in each module

If you are not able to meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements, you can apply to study one of the university’s English language courses.

Additional Expenses

Besides the tuition fee, the additional charges at CQUniversity are

1. Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)

The SSAF is compulsory for all degree-level students. The maximum SSAF for the year 2021 is $312.

This fee is used to improve the non-academic services and amenities for students.

2. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

It is mandatory for all students to get health insurance for the duration of your study. CQUniversity prefers Allianz Care for OSHC for its students.

All the information related to OSHC will be provided during your admission. And, you need to pay the specified amount as the health insurance.

3. SUNDRY Charges

It includes late, graduation, and library charges. This is optional in many cases.


Accommodation at CQUniversity

1. On-campus Accommodation

The on-campus accommodation is only available on Rockhampton and Mackay. You need to apply for accommodation.

The application for the on-campus accommodation opens in February, June, and October of each year. And, the application fee is $100.

Based on the type of accommodation you choose, the weekly price ranges from $200 to $370.

2. Off-campus Accommodation

If you go for off-campus accommodation, you can find rental apartments and houses near the campus. Here, the cost of living is determined by the rent of an apartment, electricity, water, gas, and internet bills.

Sharing apartments among others is what most Nepali students prefer. So that, the overall cost will be shared among students.

Besides, you can also rent a small room in a shared apartment. Here, you will be sharing common areas like the kitchen, lounge, bathroom, and so on.

Note: Either you live on-campus or off-campus, planning your accommodation before arrival is what everyone suggests.


Scholarships for International Students

CQUniversity provides 24 million AUD worth of scholarships for international students annually. Scholarships are awarded based on the academic performance of students.
