Monash University: A Study Guide for Nepali Students

Monash University is a Melbourne-based university that was established in 1958. It gets its name from Sir John Monash (an engineer and military Leader)

According to QS World University Ranking 2020, it is ranked 58th globally.

Monash University is one of the universities of Australia’s Group of Eight. It provides courses in the field of Engineering, Nursing, Information Technology, Architecture, Business, Pharmacy, Law, and so on.

Because of these large varieties of courses, it is among the top destinations for students from Nepal.


Monash Location (Campus)

Monash University has campuses both inside Australia and outside Australia. Inside Australia, its campuses are

1. Clayton Campus

  • Largest Monash campus
  • Location: Clayton, Victoria (20km south-east from Melbourne)
  • Courses: Engineering, IT, Nursing, Law, Business, etc.

2. Caulfield Campus

  • Second Largest Campus
  • Location: Caulfield East, Victoria (9 km south-east of Melbourne)

No matter which campus you choose to study, the university has set certain standards for research and education that you will find on all campuses.


Requirement Criteria to Enroll in Monash University

You must meet the minimum entry criteria to pursue any courses at the university. These entry requirements ensure that you are eligible to be considered in any of the courses of the university.

1. Academic Requirement

For any courses, you must meet the minimum academic requirements. The academic requirements will be different for different courses.

For students from Nepal, you need to meet the following provided criteria:

Undergraduate Course (Bachelor)

  • Completion of higher secondary school (+2) with English
  • Completion of diploma (3 years) in the related field

Postgraduate Course(Master)

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in the same or related field
  • Work experience in the related field. Not all postgraduate courses require work experience.

2. English Language Requirement

English is not the first language for Nepali students. So, students from Nepal must demonstrate English proficiency through different Language tests.

Here’s a list of different tests with minimum scores applicable in Monash University.

  • IELTS: Overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6 in each band
  • TOEFL (internet-based): Overall score of 79 with score 13 in reading, 12 in Listening, 21 in Writing, and 18 in Speaking
  • TOEFL (paper-Based): Overall 550 with a score of 4.5 in written English
  • PTE: Undergraduate: Overall score of 58 with no score less than 50 in each skill

The score provided here is a general score. The overall score may vary based on different courses.

Note:

Monash University also seeks the age requirement. It requires that students must be 17 years old during the time of enrollment. If not, you should require approval from the Dean of faculty (course) you are applying to.

Additional Expenses in Monash

Besides the tuition fees, you should be able to cover additional expenses such as

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

The OSHC is compulsory for every international student for the duration of their student visa.

It can be arranged by the university. Or, you can purchase it from any approved insurer. The preferred OSHC provider of UOW is Bupa. To get the list of approved insurers, visit Health Insurers.

Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)

It includes fees for sport and recreation, career counseling, student clubs, and employment. The maximum fee for 2021 is $313.

Other expenses include textbooks, printing, device cost, and so on.


Accommodation for Monash University

The accommodation costs and living expenses depend on your location, accommodation type, and lifestyle.

You can choose to live either on-campus or off-campus.

1. On-campus Accommodation

On-campus accommodations are available in Clayton and Peninsula campus. Here’s a list of different types of on-campus residency available at Monash University.

  • It includes a private bedroom with a king-size bed, chair, desk, and wardrobe.

Scholarship for International Students

Monash University provides scholarships for both the bachelor’s and master’s courses. The scholarships are provided on different criteria: based on the performance of previous academics, family background, community, and so on.

Here’s a list of some of the popular scholarships for Nepali students.

1. Engineering International Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: $10,000 per year
  • Based on the Admission Score

2. Pharmacy International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship

  • Amount: 25-50% of tuition fee
  • Based on Academics Result

3. Monash International Merit Scholarship

  • Amount: $10,000 per year
  • Based on Academic Achievements
  • You need to separately apply for this scholarship: Application Form

4. Monash Resident Scholarship

  • Amount: $14,000
  • Based on Need

Apply To Monash University

Monash University only accepts applications directly from students or through one of its registered agents.

1. Applying through Agents (Consultancies)

You can visit the Monash Agent Database to get the list of verified agents present in your country. Visit the page and select the country Nepal (or your country if you are from other places).

They will guide you throughout your application procedure.

2. Applying Online

However, if you wish to apply by yourself, you can directly apply using Monash University Online Applications. The application fee for applying online is $100.

Besides, you need to provide your documents and details about the course during the application.

Required information

  • Name and Code of your Course
  • Course start date
  • Campus Location
  • Documents mentioned in Entry Requirements
  • Copy of passport
  • English language test score
  • Translation of documents in English

Once your application is successful, you will get an offer letter from the university.

The offer letter includes International Student Course Agreement (ISCA). It includes all the details about the fees and requirements.

You need to deposit the specified fee to the Monash Central Admission. Then, send the signed ISCA and deposit proof to the university.

After verification from the university, you will receive a Confirmation of Enrollment (COE). COE is needed while applying for a student visa.
